Matrox Millennium II graphics card – MGA 2164W – 4 MB Series
G’s OpenGL support was very poor until years into its life. Dxdiag allows you to enable AGP texturing, but the built-in test fails and in fact even some games crashes at the start. Pco 3D acceleration appears to be identical with even the same bugs.
It does not support hardware texture mapping. Note that the final drivers for G include a OpenGL driver with a bug that breaks transparent water. There are exception though- Millennium II supports 3d rendering in 32 bit colors and 32 matrpx Z-buffer.
Like the Parhelia, these boards have no driver support for Windows 9x. With larger framebuffer 32 bit colors are possible, but performance hit remains steep.
I expected little impact from more memory and AGP bus. Games like Populous, Take no Prisoners and Thief wisely reject the chip as hardware accelerator, and texture-less Shogo should do the same.
Gaming experience There is a newer driver for the Millenium 2, but that does not mean improvement for 3d gaming. The creepy feeling of hardware masochism. Memory bus width remains 64 bit. In absolute numbers the Mystique would be leading, but in relative numbers cards score the same because Millennium puts its 8 MB of memory to use in advanced games.
Matrox released their first Mystique on August 14, Initially the card did not have an OpenGL driver. This was only used for the Headcasting millenium. Matrox’s first Direct3D 8 accelerator, although it was initially advertised has having partial D3D9 capabilities. Z-fighting may milleinum be a problem and enabling bit z-buffer can help this.

It is the last MSI compatible card. Overwrite the older ICD in the Windows directory. The image is crisp, has fine colors. Cpi AGP cards were produced in high numbers and that is what I am going to test with 8 megabytes of video memory. Performance of this card is slightly above the G and G It does have a hardware transform and lighting unit but it is not Direct3D 7 compliant. Newer versions, including Mystiquekept appearing until summer None of vertex fog, texture mip mapping, and dithering matros supported.
But it is obvious competing semi-professional cards Permedia 2 and Revolution 3D offered much better 3d. Unless otherwise indicated, HF drivers require version 1. Conclusion For a gamer Millennium 2 with price way higher then Mystique did not make sense. Looks like Matrox had clock variation tolerance matfox in place for very long time.
