I ran into the same problem with my notebook. I notice others have tried it and the results look good. You should disable all third-party repos and drivers prior to upgrading and you should also do an update prior to upgrading. Hit F6 there and choose ‘nomodeset’ from the options that pop up. I am going to try it myself. I have seen some additional driver selections result in a partially build vidro of nvidia modules, with the main module missing.
Actually, I found the nouveau driver in Lubuntu worked acceptably as far as performance, dv600 it really overheated my video chip, so I did switch to the Nvidia drivers and dv650 things working.
